Bringing in the New Year with the Winter Classic

Here Come the Hawks.... and Their They Go

2009 did not start off too shabby. I was able to score some tickets for the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Most people don't know but I love the Hawks as much as the Bears. Maybe more at times. Of course I have the White Sox in the warmer months.

Back to Wrigley Field.... I have not been there in a long time. I can't recall the last game. Maybe the McGwire / Sosa home run chase? Could it really have been that long?

After stepping into the friendly confines, I quickly remember why it's been so long. I hate that park. Period. 20 minutes to use the bathroom, 20 minutes to get a brat, sound system sucks, obstructed views and lets be honest, Cubs new slogan is, 101 - Here We Come. President Regan once said, "Tear down that wall". I think its time.

(and by no means am I saying that the Cell is better. It has its flaws but at least they are being addressed every year)

OK, I am done bitching about Wrigley field. For now. The pre-game was spectacular. Honoring the legends of the Blackhawks as well as the Cubs. I think I might have even clapped for Sandberg when he was announced. I was just caught up in the moment.

The world was finally able to see how the National Anthem should be played. With screaming fans, clapping and yelling to the words. Cheering like there was no tomorrow. It really felt like the old Chicago Stadium. Fireworks were going off and then some fighter jets flew really low overhead. I then raised my flask in honor of the men and women who were fighting for our great Country.

Then the game came.... the first period was awesome. Three goals by the Hawks. Unfortunately, that's all the Hawks scored (except late in the last period). The Red Wings showed why they are a veteran Championship team. They just chipped back at the Hawks and won with a 6 to 4 final score. At least the Hawks got a taste of what playoff hockey will look like.

Hope everyone has a prosperous 2009!
