When Jenn and I got married, we were seriously considering about buying a motor boat. A friend of mine, on the fire department with me, was selling his boat. I went to look at it and the price was right but I could not just bring myself to buy it.
Reason? We could not tell our parents that we bought a boat when we didn't own a house. In my eyes, I had to get my priorities in order. That was the same reason that we didn't buy time share in
Not that I have been even remotely thinking of buying a boat but I came across something today that told made me that I made the right call. The gas bill.
I stopped to fill up the bike on the way home tonight. While I was filling 'er up, a guy was pumping gas to a moderate looking boat. He asked jokingly if we wanted to switch bills. I laughed at him.
I said I bet that holds five times as much gas as my bike which holds five gallons (and gets 38 miles to the gallon (corrected)). Then the boat owner laughed. Get this. His boat holds 120 gallons! Assuming he was filling it up from winter storage, with current prices being $3.16, his bill will be a grand total of $379.20. I think my jaw hit the floor. I was happy to fill up 4.5 half gallons for over $16.00 and be on my way.
I guess this guy had some money because he was driving a gas guzzling Escalade.
Looking back at not buying the boat, I think I made the right call. Al Gore would be proud of me too.
